Operation Sans Interwebs

Token picture of random amish people because Steve claims I am now part amish.

Since my last post, I’ve been hiding out in my apartment practicing my Dance Central moves on the XBOX Kinect.  Just kidding, or am I?

What I’ve really been doing is experimenting life without the internet.  WTF, you say?  To my surprise, it’s not quite the FML package I imagined.  It all started with my rage against Comcast for increasingly outrageous costs that ultimately could not be remedied with a phone call to their customer service department.  After living in the comfort of multiple 6-month free and/or discounted trials, I could no longer justify a $100+ monthly variable cost for cable and internet.  So here I am, internet-less in Seattle.

As I grow accustomed back to my pre-Internet childhood days, I am slowly realizing the re-adoption of activities that once served as daily habits.  I’ve decided to create a random list of the little things that keep me entertained sans interwebs.  I welcome all of your suggestions.

  • Using my 5 lbs. dumbbells for the first time since I purchased them for 2004 New Year’s resolutions.
  • Re-organizing my refrigerator. My pantry. My kitchen drawers. My closet. My bathroom cabinet. Anything that can be organized, really.
  • Turning on my XBOX to watch instant movies on Netflix, then realizing internet may have been necessary.
  • Practicing more moves on Dance Central. My Kinect couldn’t have come more handy at this time.
  • Doing dishes immediately in lieu of letting it pile up the next day because I decided to check my Facebook which normally results in surfing the web for 3 hours.
  • Laundry. But more importantly, folding clothes as soon as laundry is finished.
  • Reading magazines (yes, I still desperately cling on to my monthly subscription to a dying business).
  • Reading shopping catalogs (sense my desperation here).
  • Reading books (the one and only satisfying activity on this list).
  • Succumbing and walking to the nearest coffee shop, with my black lab in tow, to write this blog post.

At the end of the day, I am seeing a productive pattern here (of things I would/should/need to do had I not been faced by distractions from __________).  But it’s been almost two weeks and I’m starting to run out of things to do.
